Journal #2

1.     Text without visual component

The sign says men working. We can't see little men working. We only see a sign, but we know what to expect.

2.     Visual without text

We don't need to see the words "Curve Ahead" to know there's a curve coming.

3.     Adapted to a specific audience, purpose and context

These tickets would only be important to someone who likes Dave Matthews. Such person would think this image is wonderful. Someone like me, would probably not pay attention to it.

4.     Balance

A boy and a girl, both dressed in different colors. One looking to one side, the other to the other side. One with both arms up and the other with one down. It creates balance in the picture.

5.     Classification or grouping into categories

The ribbons are classified in different compartments.

6.     Comparison and contrast (juxtaposition)

Hitler on one side. Ahmadinejad on the other. Hitler's wearing dark clothes. Ahmadinejad wearing light clothes. Hitler's background is white. Ahmadinejad's background is dark. It creates a comparison (since both have the same pose) and also a contrast.

7.     Description or details

Someone would have to know the sport to know all the details of what is happening in this picture.

8.     Narration

This might be a family, but why are they sitting on their doorstep? There's more to the story than just what we see in this image.

9.     Pattern (Repetition)

Same pattern (various DVDs) different colors.

10.  Point of view

How someone sees the girl. It's not a portrait of the girl, since the computer is on the way, but it's just what the person sitting across her sees.

11.  Proportion

We have a pear (that's supposed to be small) that has a bigger proportion (or almost the same) than the mountain.

12.  Unity

All the baby boys are wearing the same outfits that unite them.

13.  Emphasis

The emphasis is not on the sewing machine but on the working hands.

14.  Conciseness

This picture is simple. Concise and to the point. Guns and fighting for one's country's honor.

15.  Tone

The fact that the picture is in black and white makes the tone more sublime and mysterious.

16.  Ethos

Seeing the flag waving inspires authority and respect for the country.

17.  Logos

The logic in this picture is just to say it is a bust of Aristotle.

18.  Pathos

This picture appeals to our pathos, evokes feelings for a war veteran.

19.  Figure-Ground contrast

Either a bunch of branches or two birds. It depends on what we decide to focus on, the dark or light.

20. Grouping by shape, spatial nearness, or division

These are stacked by shape. From the tallest to the shortest.
